rebooting a DC freezes Exchange

I'm not sure if this is the right forum, but here it goes....

We have two Windows 2000 domain controllers and a stand alone Windows 2000
Exchange server. We'll call the domain controllers DC1 and DC2. DC1
contains the global catalog. Whenever I reboot DC1 users lose access to the
Exchange server since Exchange relies on Active Directory to function. If a
replicated copy of the AD is on DC2 shouldn't Exchange be able to access the
required data from that server while DC1 is restarting?

Hi Alan-

I believe another requirement for proper operation is a reachable GC. Since
DC1 is the only GC during it's reboot your infrastructure does not have one
therefore Exchange appears to be "down". May I suggest adding a GC to DC2?

Exchange 2000 requires a Global Catalog server in order
for to function correctly - address book, etc.
