I'm running WinXP w/ SP1. I've had the machine running fine for years,
but recently it has began to reboot and random times. I checked the
event log and it doesn't show anything out of the ordinary. There
definitely are not errors that explain why the reboot occured. Has
anyone seen this issue before?

Another oddity is that the same day it started rebooting is the same
day that my secondary master cd drive stopped working and windows would
not load at all. I disconnected it and the system seemed fine. I also
checked that the cdrom was the problem. I plugged my primary cable
(the one that has my hd) into the secondary ide part of the motherboard
and my os came up fine, so I know that there is not a problem with my
secondary ide channel. (Everything is being detected correctly in my
bios, except for the bad cd drive, no matter how I connect my drives).
So now the cd drive is removed and I'm experiencing the random reboots.
It even happens in safe mode. I ran an adaware scan and a nav scan,
and I came out okay. Somehow I got vx2 spyware on the machine, but
adaware successfully removed it. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Could it be a bad power supply? I've had it for about 4 years.
Thanks in advance.

First of all, uncheck this checkbox under My Computer -> Properties ->
Advanced tab -> Settings within Startup and Recovery -> Automatically
restart. If it were checked, you might have had a BSOD and you simply didn't
see it because the computer automatically restarted. Now you should see the
BSOD and be more able to analyze what's going on.

Also check for overheating. Open the case, blow out all the dust
bunnies. Are all the fans working? Get a utility to monitor
motherboard and CPU temperatures.

Start/Run drwtsn32.exe <enter>
Look at the application errors, might give you place to start.
