What Antivirus program are you using?

You CAN use your original Windows CD to do a clean install, but
perhaps your A/V program isn't up to par?

I would try and get rid of the viruses and spyware first. Reloading windows
on your computer might not be that easy for you.

A good place to get help is forums.majorgeeks.com go to the malware removal
forum and read how to post your logs and get the help you need.

If you follow their instructions you will not only remove your viruses, but
you will also learn alot in the process.

You'd use the disks that came with your computer to do this. However, this
will probably also remove any data of yours.

One other approach is to remove the drive from your system, attach it to
another system running XP, and then allow a virus scanner (or several) to
scan and clean the drive, and clean out the temp and temporary internet
files folders. This will put you a step ahead of the malware, and not
delete your data.

Several points:

1. First, note that the "reboot" means to restart your computer, something
that most of us do every day. What you want to do is "reinstall" Windows,
not reboot your computer.

2. If you have a Windows installation CD, just boot from it (change the BIOS
boot order if necessary to accomplish this) and follow the prompts for a
clean installation (delete the existing partition by pressing "D" when
prompted, then create a new one).

You can find detailed instructions here:
http://michaelstevenstech.com/cleanxpinstall.html

or here http://xphelpandsupport.mvps.org/how_do_i_install_windows_xp.htm

or here http://windowsxp.mvps.org/XPClean.htm

or here http://www.webtree.ca/windowsxp/clean_install.htm

3. If your computer came with Windows preinstalled, and you have no
installation CD, consult your documentation for how to do this. The
procedure is different for different machines.

4. Most important, reinstalling Windows is probably the wrong thing to do.
Viruses can almost always be removed by an anti-virus program. If yours
isn't working, then get one that works. If you just reinstall to get rid of
viruses, you will undoubtedly repeat the same behavior that got you infected
in the first place, and quickly find yourself back in exactly the same
situation.
