Hi:

Do I have to reapply SP2 and/or other major updates if I added major Windows
Components (e.g. IIS, Network Service, etc.) after these major updates have
already been applied?

Windows usually would ask for CD when doing this, but files in the CD
certainly are not the latest.

Windows Update also won't show anything after those components have been
added.

I have this question for a long time and usually would do so just for
insurance.

With previous versions of Windows this would be the case. Not so with
XP. When you install a service pack on XP, it stores the service pack
files in a folder under the Windows folder called ServicePackFiles. It
also updates the registry to let Windows know where the updated SP files
can be found. This is done so that if you add a component to Windows it
will get the SP versions of the files if they have been updated for the
component rather than the original files.

Thanks for anyone knows the answer.

Hi:

Thanks so much and I guess that is why Windows Update won't show up
anything.

One more question, is it also true for other major updates, such as
accumulated IE updates post SP2, and so on, which means I can feel assured
as long as Windows Update does not show anything after I removed and added
certain components?

Thanks again.

SP2, if you got the full version and not the 'all you need now' from
Windows Update, will have made a folder of ServicePackFiles in Windows
which will be used for installations like this where SP2 had a later
version file than is on the CD

There is a mechanism in place to do this using the ServicePackCachePath.
I'm not sure if all updates from MS take advantage of this yet. To be
safe you would want to reinstall any critical updates after adding a
windows component.

Hi

XP isn't the only OS this applies to, this is the same for Win2k
as well.
