Realtek Driver Update from MS and loss of Volume Icon from Not. Ar

Last week MS made a Realtek driver update available--it came with the
security patches and all that other stuff. What a mess! First, it trashed
the driver in my copy of Total Recorder Pro and I had to reinstall. Second,
the Volume control icon won't appear in the Notification Area. When I try to
set the checkbox on General Tab under Sounds and Audio Devices I get this
error message--

"Windows cannot display the volume control on the taskbar because the Volume
Control Program has not been installed. To install it, use Add/Remove
Programs in Control Panel."

This is nonsense! Of course it's there--I can control sound levels in
Sounds and Audio devices. Change the audio drivers, etc.

The Realtek driver and card are indicated as working properly and there are
no yellow caution flags in Device Manager.

I can play music through Real Player, Rhapsody, itunes, Winamp, Win Media
Player, etc.

I run XP HOme, SP 2 with all upgrades. I had no trouble at all before the
download of the new Realtek driver from MS. Talk about shooting myself in
the foot??? I'm not even sure why they had to "upgrade" the driver.

Can someone help me with this?? Oh, incidentally, this a an HP machine and
the HP sound manager is alive and well, fully functional and living in the
NOtification area.

Go figure.

Thanks!

This topic is evolving. It gets goofier. I found sndvol32.exe and when I
open it the Master Volume Control opens and is fully functional. Yet, when I
try to place the Sound Icon into the Notification Area by clicking that box
on the General Tab in Sounds and Audio ....... I get the same error message
noted above. This is rediculous! Not only is the software installed but is
fully operational.

Anybody have any clues? I am in deep water on this one.

I just found it after searching on the error message. Sorry for the drill
folks. I'm learning, ever-so-slowly! Apparently the Realtek update also
trashed part of the dll file for the Volume control.

Maybe this will help someone else. Thanks for putting up with me.

Thank you for your help,

I thought I did apologize and eat some crow. No need to dig me. Most of us
are just people out here, not savvy computer types like you. We don't know
the protocols that you treasure, but we learn, and try to be courteous as we
do. Yes, I try to use my initiative; I also just went through three days of
MS mess in a thread that ended up having over 20 posts. I was to quick to
leap in.
