Really wierd problems

Hi,

I seem to have a rather serious problem with my OS.

Two days ago my pc shut down, due to a significant load on the CPU. I have
since found the CPU is being used at 100%. I gathered I must have a program
or virus which had caused the CPU hit, however I cannot find anything and
I’ve done both a virus and spy-ware scan, both of which showed up nothing.

I am able to access my system in safe mode, so I gather there is a driver or
other program which is causing the problem. I decided to try a system
restore, but that did no good. Strangely, I can no longer perform a system
restore, because my OS says there are no restore points. They were there
previously though.

Now I have an even stranger problem. I keep getting a windows registration
message, along the lines of: Your system hardware has changed significantly
and windows needs to be registered again, within 3 days. Here in lies another
problem. I can only start in safe mode, or with no drivers or programs. In
safe mode I am unable to connect, and in the mode with no drivers or programs
loaded, I am unable to connect to the internet, so I can register.

I think the solution may be to re-install the OS, but I am concerned I will
lose all my settings.

I’m running XP Pro, build 2600.xpsp_sp2_gdr.xxxxxx-xxxx: Service Pack 2.
(I’m not sure if I should show the complete code, hence the x’s).

What I would dearly like to do is probably re-install XP, but save all my
previous settings. If that doesn’t work, I guess I’ll just have to do a fresh
install.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like you may have to save your files and settings using the
(F.A.S.T.) wizzard and reinstall Windows.

Thanks for that Rattleon, I'll give it a try.

I didn't know FAST existed.

Much appreciated,

Regards,

Aussiemade.

Go to: Start, all programs, acessories, system tools, File and Settings
Transfer Wizzard.
Good Day
