REALbasic 5.5. free for Windows

M

Markus

Sorry - I'm a sucker for freebies:

Realbasic has extrended it's offer for a free copy of RealBasic 5.5 to the
15th of April:
Since we started giving away REALbasic keys to Visual Basic users two weeks
ago, more than 10,000 new Windows developers like you have joined the
REALbasic community. Unlike Visual Basic, REALbasic is fully supported and
we will continue to improve it constantly based on feedback from you, our
new users.

We are so excited by the positive response from the Visual Basic user
community that we have decided to extend our offer of free REALbasic
license keys through April 15, 2005.

Definitely worth a try - get your copy at

Does this have anything to do with REAL of audio fame? If so, stay away,
stay very far away. ;)

No, but I agree with your advice anyway. I found out later it is a 10
day demo, so it was a case of commercial
spamming of acf.

The owner of realbasic has always been cheap, but only 10 days demo!?

I recommend rapidq basic, made by the same guy who wrote realbasic, but
rapidq is totally free freeware.

where does it say that, i cant find that anywhere, as far as i can see,
I got a full REALbasic 5.5 for Windows Standard Edition.

I even tried to adjust my clock to 27. april 2005 and it did'n stop
working and was still licenced to me.

Do you have taken this one http://www.realsoftware.com/download/demo/
instead of the one in the first message

Maybe you are right, that we are talking about different things here.

I tried to find more information on the realbasic site, after somebody
talked about reading the TOS, and found the offer for a free 10 day
demo.

The download for VB users, (which is not checked in any way, by the
way), is maybe not time limited.
(could you set your clock to next year too, and see if it still works?)

I had many heated debates with the owner of realbasic, mr Perlman, over
his attempts to stop the free rapidq basic, and I also tried to make him
understand that his marketing strategy was lousy. He should allow
millions of freeware users of an older version of realbasic, to attract
buyers for the latest version, or something like that.

He could not admit that I was right then, but maybe he has realized the
truth of my views now.

From that page: "RapidQ's author, William Yu, sold the source code to
REALbasic in 2000. The freely distributed program is still available and
in use, but hasn't been updated since."

Using a programming language that is no longer under development (about
5 years!), are you shure?

It has been possible to update it via external parts like library units
etc.. so that does not give a correct picture of the situation.

The amount of free example programs in rapidq is very big and very
valuable for a user of the language. You can take a program which is
working and start changing it until it fits your purposes.

There aren't so many freeware alternatives in basic compilers, so even
a 5 year old language is very valuable, and rapidq is a lot easier to
read and write than visual basic. This has made it very attractive even
though it is not technically as sophisticated as other languages.

William Yu made the then current version into freely distributable
freeware before he started to work for mr Perlman.

Mr Perlman cannot change the license of rapidq
retroactively, once freely distributable freeware stays freely
distributable freeware.

The status as a free programming language is so valuable compared to a
closed circuit language that it doesn't matter much that it is a few
years old.

Mr Perlman owns the copyright to the old compiler
which is freeware, but has declared publically, in a discussion with
me, that he will never put any demands on the language itself. If others
write new compilers, the language is free from connections to him.

There are several projects going on which are creating new compilers
for the rapidq basic programming language.

Because of the unique name rapidq it is easy to find on the web, so I
don't give any links to it.

Do me a favor and give a working link. All the links I can find point
to basicguru and that site's gone. Thank you.
