Is RealPlayer a Windows component?

Reason that I am asking: It came with my Gateway computer purchased about a
year ago, and I have Version 8 Build 9.0.0.584, which apparently is free.

I don't use it a lot, but in a brief use recently it began to tell me that
it is not up to date and that I need to download a new update Version 10.5
Build 6.0.12.1750

I then unloaded that "new" version about three times (a long download each,
about 30 minute each or longer), but then after I restarted the computer
after each of the downloadings, I still have the old version 8 on my
RealPlayer. An I don't know where the downloads are (I could not find them,
and they are not on My Downloaads). Where they might be?

What is the equivalent of that program that comes free with Windows?

Please enlighthen me as to RealPlayer or it Windows equivalent as much as
possible. I don't use these it a lot, but I will like to inform myself
about these and the reason why the downloads are not being picked to update
my old program.

Thanks in advance.

Real Player is not a Windows component. It is a third-party player. You
only need it if you want to play files that are in Real Player's format,
usually streaming from the Internet. Many people don't like Real Player
because it is so invasive in terms of privacy but you can decide that
for yourself.

Thanks, Malke, does Widows Vista has an equivalent program that comes free
with Vista or that can be downloaded from Microsoft?
