Last version of dbpoweramp converter- not current one. Sorry I don't

but off topic ones!

I know that there was a vote about this fairly recently, and the
overwhelming opinion was that the existence of anything smelling of
money should be totally ignored. However, I don't really understand the
hang-up which this NG has about the occasional mention of something
which is not freeware. I'm not advocating blatant advertising, but if I
can't get free, I'd still like to know what the alternatives are. I
don't have to buy it. I'm not an idiot.

Allowing discussions about payware in this freeware group has never
been an issue here. It simply is not done. Fyi, there is a shareware
newsgroup.

Nothing stopping you finding alternatives to freeware. Just go to the
appropriate newsgroups. Freeware is here. Non freeware is found in
other newsgroups. Pretty easy to understand I would think.

It's not a neurotic "hang-up" or anything of the like. It's simply
common sense and a desire to follow the fundamental usenet tradition
(netiquette) of *staying on topic*.

Ian, it's really simple. This group is named "alt.comp.freeware" and is
supposed to be for the discussion of freeware. Suggesting non-freeware
alternatives *clutters up the group and confuses others who come here
looking for freeware*. It will establish a precedent for others to
engage in that "blatant advertising" that you refer to. In essence, it
will degrade the usefulness and functionality of the group. Not only
that, but there are other, more appropriate newsgroups for discussing
non-freeware solutions.

Sure, this group is unmoderated and you can post anything you like, but
you'll face the wrath of the regulars if you post something that's
deliberately off-topic. You can liken it to a country that's in a state
of anarchy (as, for instance, Guatemala was or is). The lawless will run
amok, but only until normal citizens get fed up and take steps to end
the problems.

Why shit in your nest?
