Warning: if you convert from one lossy format to another you may lose
sound quality to quite a considerable extent. Different (lossy)
compression formats use different algoritms and wil leave out
different information in the compression process. So, when a file is
compressed twice its loses information twice. No, that may be OK with
speech but it can have quite disastrous effects on music.

Thanks to everyone for their suggestions and for the warning (above). The
main reason I need a program is for converting downloaded .ra files from
BBC's "listen Again" radio facility. I want to download predominantly
speech programmes, so quality isn't too important.

Well, I like to mention that the video transcoder called Super can also
convert Realaudio files to MP3's.

You can download Super from http://www.erightsoft.com/SUPER.html .

Super can't convert Realaudio files by default but if you have the Real
audio codecs on your computer such as from Real Alternative then you
can convert Relaudio files to MP3's.

Super is a 30 MB download but it is worth it espically since it can
convert many audio/video formats to another format.

To get Super to convert a Realaudio format to MP3, do these steps. Open
up Super & also open up the directory on your computer where your
Realaudio files is located.

Open Super loads up, look for the drop menu which says select the
output container & select MP3 from the menu. On the right side of the
program, there is a button box which says use directshow, click on the
button box to select this box. Now drag your Realaudio file(s) into the
box which says Drop a Valid Media File here & then click on the encode
button. The reason why the use directshow box has to be checked is that
Super has no support for Realaudio but it will use the codecs Real
codecs on your computer to convert.

When the encoding is done, you can find your encoded files at
C:\Program Files\eRightSoft\Super\OutPut .
