reading .wps files in XP

I just got a new computer running on Windows XP. My old computer was a real
dinasaur and had Windows Milleneum 2000. The document files were saved in
Word Perfect as .wps and now I have Word. The new computer will not open up
the old .wps files. I know there must be a way---but I don't know how as I
am not really computer savvy. Can someone please help?

Thanks!

Sorry, ignore other posting I made. Just open Word, select File, Open,
and then in files of type, Change to All files *.* or scroll down to WPS
files.

Word provides for conversion of Wordperfect and "older" version Word files.
however conversion capability must be installed at time of Word
installation.
If Bob I's suggestion works - you are OK - if not.and you have the Office
CD - you can insert the CD - select option to add components.

Word will read WordPerfect files, but you have to include the option to do
it when you install Word. I believe you can also install what you need now,
but I am far from a Word expert, and can't tell you how. Ask in a Word
newsgroup and I'm sure someone can get you going.

Well---I looked closer at this new computer---apparently the girl in the main
office who ordered this computer, just had XP put on it and nothing else!!!!!
I have put a requisition in to have the computer guys come out and install
Office Pro so we have some software so we can actually use this thing taking
up space on top of my desk.
AAAARRRRGGGGG!!!!!!!

Oh and one more thing-----
Microsoft has a free file that you can download called "The Works 6.0
Converter" that will convert the .wps files to .doc----that is, when I
actually do get Word. In the meantime, I am stuck here at work unable to
work. Oh well.

Thanks to all of you guys for being so helpful. I am sorry that I did not
check this thing more closely sooner.
