Reading Volume serial number

Benoit Desmarais

Hi,

I have an application that reads the volume serial number as a mean of
copy protection. All of my users are set with the group User. The
program fails to do the test and I cannot use the software. I've tried
with Power User also but to no avail. Works flawlessy with the admin
group.

But being admin isn't an option for me. Is there a policy that I can
change that will let me access the serial number.

Thanks in advance,

There are two things you can do:

1. The best solution is to contact the makers of the application to find
out where their program is trying to write. This is undoubtedly a known
issue and they should know the workaround or have any patches. This is
the quickest course of action.

2. If you can't contact their tech support, then you can run the free
Sysinternals file utilities filemon and regmon from an Administrative
account. Doing this will show you where the application is trying to
write - to a file folder and/or to a registry key. Then you can change
permissions on just those items.
