Reading View causes Outlook to stop responding

I just upgraded to Office 2003 Pro from Office XP Pro. For several months
prior to upgrading, every so often, Outlook would stop responding on opening.
I would restart the system, do a Detect & Repair and everything would be OK.
It did this just before I upgraded. However, the D&R didn't work. So I
hoped that the upgrade would work. After upgrading, I found that with the
default Reading View on, Outlook would again appear to hang. In reality, if
I wait long enough, 5-10 mins, the reading view would appear and Outlook
would appear OK until I clicked on another folder. Then the reading view
would have to re-initialize. If I turn off the reading view in the Inbox,
Outlook starts up just fine. However, I realized that the reading view is
turned on by default for all the folders. I know that I can start Outlook
with the /nopreview switch to work around this problem. But I shouldn't have
to.

Has anyone else encountered this problem? How did you fix it... or did you?

Thanks...

Clem

Have you tried a new mail profile? I always prefer a clean install rather
than an upgrade since upgrades just bring the same problems to the new
version, in most cases that I have seen.

Thanks for your quick response Milly. I've tried the new profile with no
success. I did try a "clean" install after reading your response. What I
actually did was to completely uninstall Office 2003 then reinstall it. This
time, there was no option for an upgrade vs. clean install so I chose a
custom install (I always do) so that I could select that Office 2003 run
entirely from my computer. I still had the same issue.

I may have finally fixed it, however. I went to Add/Remove with every
intention of uninstalling Office 2003 and reinstalling Office XP (fully
realizing the headaches that might generate!), when I decided to give Repair
a try. Well, after repairing my Office installation, and much to my
surprise, Outlook appears to work perfectly! It opens quickly, emails open
quickly, the Reading Pane works quickly. I'd better stop here, as I don't
want to jinx this... hehehe.

Thanks again for your help,

Clem

I too was having the same problem. After re-installing it just to have the
same problem, I just about had it and was about to start looking for an
alternative program. Thanks to ClemP, I decided to try the Repair option in
the Add / Remove Programs (go to Microsoft Office xx...then click "Change"
and then Re-install / Repair). Works great now.
