Hi,

Probably not the right group for this question but didnt know of any
other group to post.

I have downloaded some files with extension "ps" on to my Win XP Home
computer.

I couldnt read this with notepad/textpad etc.

I searched the web and the site http://www.filext.com/ listed a link to
Ghostscript which could be used for reading this.

I would like to now as to whether there is any other method of reading
..ps fles other than using Ghostscript etc.

Moreever whats the idea behind using an extension like .ps for saving
files. Why couldnt folks use PDF or Word etc? Does .ps offer some
special/different features?

They are most likely Postscript files, but you probably know that.
Why did you download .ps files if you don't have anything that will
use them?
If you post an URL for the download, perhaps someone can determine
which .ps file type it is.
I guess folks don't use PDF or Word for .ps files as they are not the
same type.

Hari,

If you rename the file by leaving off the extension .ps you should now be
able to use Notepad to open the file.

Hi Alan,

Thanks for the post. Actually I downloaded some course materials
(tutorials) from University web-sites etc (got it from google, not able
to retrace my steps!!). Most of the times the profs used to provide PDF
along with PS extension. But sometimes some of the files used to be
only in PS, hence am forced to download the file as am interested in
the reading up the material. (I know that it is postscript only).
I guess folks don't use PDF or Word for .ps files as they are not the
same type.
Im sorry but couldnt undertstand you. I want to know as to what
additonal functionality does PS provide (wrt PDF/Word), other-wise why
would people use PS for word-processing. he ghostscript web-site says
something about laser printing. Is this format especially used for
Laser printers (doesnt make sense to me?)

In the same vein I wanted to know as to how to open a file by the
following name/extension "Bayesian Spatial regression analysis.ps.tgz".
(I might have renamed the file after downloading but didnt change the
extension - I dont remember the link from where I got it) When i click
on it Win-zip tries to extract it but then says "Archive contains one
file. Should win-zip compress it to a temporary folder and open it." I
say no and the zip window shows a file "Bayesian Spatial regression
analysis.ps.tar" (the end extension changed to .tar from .tgz). When I
double-click on this file I get a message "Error-reading header after
processing Zero entries"

Hi Drew,

I used TextPad and it shows illegible characters. Anyway Once I
installed GS I see that there are images/figures in the document.

Word 2003 will open postscript files. Corel Essentials also used to use the
extension for some graphics, which would not open in Word

..ps should directly print, try right clicking the file and
send to the printer.

You need tar to unpack a .tar file.

Get IZARC, it will do them all. Just a hint, keep track of
what you download and what you do with it, such as where you
got it, what you intended to do with it, and where you saved
it on the computer. If you are going to be renaming files,
keep the original and make a copy to rename in case you
screw something up.

The unstated and obviously true, but at a university and in
most offices, Post Script printers are not rare.

| A .PS file will only print on a postscript-capable
printer.

Hi Jim,

Thanks for that. IZARC worked well and didnt report any error like
Win-Zip. Subsequently I opened it using GSVIEW.

One more thing. I notice that my colleague has Adobe full version and
in it Adobe distiller could open/convert to PDF which is nice.

Drew,

Im not sure as to whether it would work always, like in my case the PS
file has graphs/charts etc.

Uncle John,

I tried to pen in word 2003, but got a dialog box about something like
type of encoding (whether windows, MS-dos etc) and it didnt work.

Yes, having the full Adobe product is nice, but it is
expensive and there are ways to work around many of the
limitations with PDF files. A PDF is really a picture
format that may have fields.
