Reading Japanese text in e-mail

My son recently went to Japan for a year. He sends us e-mail (to our Outlook
e-mail) using his Japanese cell phone. Some of the text is showing up only as
boxes -- so confused as to how correct this so we can read it.
 
while in OE view-----encoding--more--Japanese
Hope this helps but not sure as he is sending English
