Read Receipts stuck in Outbox

Whenever I get emails that require a read receipt, Outlook 2000 generates
the receipt which gets stuck in the outbox and seems to lock up the sending
program and apparently do not get sent. I usually end up deleting them.
Cannot find any setting which influences this strange occurance!

Often read receipts are refused by email servers. Receipts are stored as
hidden messages in the top level of the mailbox that wait for the next
send/receive.
