read receipts causing errors

I have an exchange 2000 exchange environment running on a win2000 domain. I
am having issues with people sending read receipts in multiple versions of
outlook. Person A sends and email with a read receipts requested. Person B
opens the email says except receipt and send reply. Then the reply just
disappears and does not reach person A. Then Person B trys to due a send
receive and gets thie error:
The error message we are receiving when we try to send email is:

Task ‘[email protected] – Sending’ reported error (0x800CCC0F):
‘The connection to the server was interrupted. If this problem continues,
contact your
Server administrator of Internet Service Provider (ISP). The server
responded: 454 5.7.3 Client does not have permission
to Send as this Sender.

Any ideas?? Some people can send the receipts with no problems…

Are your users connecting to the Exchange server via POP or IMAP? The
error code you refer to should only come from an attempt to send via SMTP.
In all likelihood, the Exchange server is rejecting the null sender address
("<>") required for read-receipts. I think there's an option in Exchange
that says that the sender of the message must match the identity with which
the user logged into the server - try turning that off and see if it
corrects the problem.
