I am the only Administrator and the PC does not use passwords.

I have created a folder in Excel 2007 which has several subfolders. I want
to rename the folder so I can work on a duplicate without risking damage.

However, I am not allowed to do this. Each time I try I get "You need to
confirm this operation", followed by "You need permission to perform this
action" 'Try again'. This just repeats each time I try so it is not
possible for me to achieve what I want.

Can someone help?

Two questions - a) how did you "create a folder in Excel" and b) where did
you "create" this folder?

Hi,

I suspect you created this folder structure under the C:\Program Files
install directory? If so, this is why you are running into issues as user
accounts (regardless of level) will only have read and execute permissions
to this protected system folder structure. You need to move the data to your
user account or other non-protected area.

I wondered that, and if you are correct, I wonder why the OP did that? If
you do "Save-As" in any Excel version (AFAIK) it defaults in the first
instance to the Documents folder.....

Do you have any of the files within the folder open? This will likely
result in the file being locked - and thus preventing the renameing of the
containing folders.

Hi, Rick.

The folder was created on the 'C' drive (C:\Folder\Subfolder) Both contain
..xlsm and .xls files. Can't say I've had this problem before - at least not
that I can remember.

Is there any reason why you didn't create this in your Documents folder, to
which your User has full read/write access? (Vista is far more permissions
orientated than previous versions of Windows....)

Just more convenient for what I am used to. I removed all the subfolders and
it worked okay. But I can't believe that's how it should be.

Vista has all sorts of issues with file protections. It's because MS
used a band aid approach to "improve" security. In general, you as a
user have no permissions anywhere except in the c:\users area.

You will need to learn how to set the permissions on the parent
folders and sub folders that you create. There are some web based
guides that you can google for.

It took me so long to read that that I think it might apply to me as well
:)

BTW, having looked at the remainder of this thread (some others as well), I
find that I have to commend you for your generosity to the person in
question. You're kinder than I might have been.

I didn't check (will if it happens again) but I'm sure I was already the
owner. I checked now and it has me as owner and changing name is not a
problem any more.

Can't say I really understand what happened.
