in windows, right click the file name, pick properties, general tab, at the
bottom, check read only.

While we are on the topic, what the heck does "read only recommended" mean?

A quick search in Help would give you an explanation.

Different from "read only" in that user can opt to ignore by clicking "No"

i have a computer that will not open a read-only Excel file, because it is
Read-only. i want it to be a read-only file, but i want this computer to be
able to open it. is there a setting that i can not find that i can change so
it can be opened. the computer is running XP and Office Pro 2003.

What happens when you try to open the file? Do you get an error message, and
if so what is it? The solution will depend on what the particular error is.

Regards,
Fred.

I am Sorry to waste your time. When i went to the computer to get a screen
shot of the error, the file opened fine. I have no idea what may have changed
since it was not my computer. Again Sorry, but thanks for your time and Fast
response

What occurs or doesn't occur when you try to open it?

Some sort of message saying you can't do this or are you given the standard
"what is your choice" message?
