Read only folders

All the folders on my desktop (Old ones and newly created
ones) are read only. When I go into propertys and unclick
the read only box, apply, OK and go back to the desktop
and then go back to properties the folder is still read
only. The PC is six months old, XP was installed by Dell.
They had me right click on My Computer and type in
msconfig and do something I didn't understand. That
didn't help. They didn't know what else to do and refered
me to you. I have restored my PC back to the middle of
Sept and the problem was still there. I undid the restore.
What do I do next?

I wish I had a solution for you, but I wanted to say that
I am having the same problem. All of my folders across 3
partitions are now suddenly read-only and can't be
changed. I also have a Dell that is 5 months old.

It seems that I can write to folders, so it may be that
the read-only attribute is not really effective. That is,
the folders display a check in the read-only box in the
Properties dialogue, but they aren't actually read-only.

In my case, DriveImage won't or can't write to a folder
because it thinks the folder is read-only, but all other
programs are writing just fine. I need to fix this so I
can make images of my drives. I'd also like to find out
the culprit here.

Do you use ZoneAlarm? When did you first notice this
problem?

I first became aware of it about a week ago but I suspect
the problem goes back further than that but I didn't
understand what was happening. I can write to the forlder
without problems tha same as you can. The real problen
for me is that when I back up to a CD RW the folder on
the CD is also read only so that if I make a change to
the original I'm unable to copy it to the CD RW unless I
rename it. I'll try the solution posted before yours.
