I moved files from my hard drive to a cd rom disc. When I did, it changed the
files to read only. I have tried to change them back to read-writable and it
won't work. I want to know why this happened, how I can stop that from
happening again, and how I can fix these files that I moved?
Thank you.

All depends upon how the files get "burned" to the CD.

With regular Windows burning, they will always be read-only.

If you were to use a packet writing application like Nero InCD, files would
not be read only and individual files could be erased or written to on the CD
just like a big floppy disk.

When copied back to HDD they would not be read-only.

To change the read-only format after you get the files back on HDD, you must
select them in Windows Explorer and change the attribute.

Thank you for responding so soon. What I did was move the files to CD Rom.
through windows XP. When I put the blank CD in, I clicked on the files, and
then told it to move to D: drive and then named the cd rom. Is there any way
to change them, I need to write to these files, both in Excel and Word. I
says I can save it with a new name, however it's not letting me do that
either.
Thank you.

You cannot write to these files as long as they remain on the CD.

You will have to copy them back to a folder on the HDD then select them all
then right-click>Properties. Untick the Read-only attribute if necessary.

NEVER a good idea to save to open from removable media.

Copy to and from is best bet.
