read-only difference between XP and 2000?

I have a common occurence of users not being able to save files to network
drives (2000 sp4 file servers) with error messages ranging from read-only to
'file already in use or open' type of errors. This has been happening for
quite some time.

Today I noticed this:

viewing folder property via mapped drive from client machine running xp sp1
shows the read-only attribute checked. viewing the same folder properties
from the actual win2000 sp4 server shows the read-only attribute not
checked?

say what?

This is normal. The read only attribute on the folder is ignored. You see
it on XP and you cannot change it. You do not see it in Windows 2000.
