At any property window of a directory there is a check box to verify the
ReadOnly atribute, I noticed that this field has three states, unmarked,
marked and shading.
I know that:

Marked state: It indicates that the directory is read only;
Unmarked state: It indicates that the directory is not read only;
Shading state: ???????

Does anybody know the meaning of this state?

Windows ignores the read-only attribute for folders.

It means the attribute isn't applicable to this resource. Folders for
instance will have the Read Only attribute greyed out since that attribute
isn't applicable to folders in XP.

Wrong. It means you are going to apply "read only" to the files
contained within, when you select apply button.
Unmarked state: It indicates that the directory is not read only;
Wrong. It means you are going to remove "read only" from the files
contained within, when you select apply button.

Shading state: ???????

Means you are not going to change the "read only" attribute of the files
contained in the folder.

It has absolutely NO meaning as to the "read-only" attribute of the
folder itself.
