Can someone explain to me and give me a solution to the
following problem:

I am running XP Professional and when I load files from a
CD onto a hard drive folder the files are read only
(which I would expect). However when I go to change
properties on all the files and uncheck the read only box
the next time I get into the directory they are still
read only.

I have tried chnaging properties on the folder and the
files within it to no avail the propoerties will not
change.

What is the problem and how can I fix this problem. Any
help would be greatly appreciated.

By default Nero and other programs change file attributes to read-only when
writing to a CDR. This is to keep with the CD-ROM specifications. The result is
exactly what you mentioned. All files copied from the CD will retain the
read-only attribute.

Same OS, but this does NOT happen here.

Make sure you click Apply THEN OK.

You have to do both.

Yes the files default to read-only on copy. They revert
after restart/reboot as well, but only if they're critical
files. This is inherent in NTFS systems, because of
security.

In 2 Timothy 3:1-7, there is a list of the qualities that
Unregenerate man will have in the last days. Is your quality
found there? If So, don't despair - Christ came to save His
people.

I'm tellin' ya....

THAT BEHAVIOR DOES NOT HAPPEN HERE!

In fact, I just copied an archived 5M CAD file from
a CDR to my secondary NTFS HD, and it appeared
on the HD as read/write without any intervention on
my part whatsoever. I opened it in AutoCad and
re-saved it just to make sure. None of the usual
bitching from ACAD that happens when I forget
to change the R/W attrib.

XP Pro SP 1A.

When I do the same on my W2K laptop, I need
to reset the read-only attrib. manually, as described above.

To the OP - are you running under an account that has
full Administrator rights when you do this? That MAY
have something to do with it.
