Read Only attribute

I'm running Windows XP on a peer to peer network.
Lately, I cannot open some files from remote computers.
When I go to the files, the attributes tab is green (i.e.
checked) as read only. I have reset it several times and
it always goes back to read only.

Any suggestions?

It's a tri-state check box. Colored in is indeterminate, checked is
read-only, unchecked is normal. If its colored in then it is not read-only
and should work as normal. Just ignore the read-only box on folders.
Most likely it is it not the read-only check box, more likely a permissions
setting.

Make sure you have sufficient rights to access / view / edit the file, by
checking the permissions on the shared drive or the permissions and/or
security of the folder / file.
