You Know Who ~

I am buying a new computer and will take a few components out of the current
computer (running win xp). I have heard that if you take stuff out windows
will assume that its been moved and will have to be re-activated.

I have upgraded the current computer with memory about a year ago and will
take out one hard drive. What can be taken out without Windows XP requiring
re-activation.

Thanks in advance.

I had the same problem on the same computer. I re-installed windows and os
did not start without activation. Activation by dial-up did not work so I
called MS to activate windows.
As I know on a new system you may install windows but after some time it
will ask for activation(it can re-activate automaticaly on the internet.).

It depends what you mean by components, if you only mean a hd, and assuming
you are slaving this hd on your new pc, win will not require activating as
the win installation is not altered

If on the other hand you mean you want to use your sys hd as the boot disk
on your new pc then if its an OEM win installation it wont work, and if its
a retail version of win you would have to repair install win

Actually, I plan to take out the slave drive and sound card of the old
computer, otherwise leave it alone. Just wondered if that would trigger
activation?

It's not supposed to but with the flawed WPA, there's only one way to
find out ...

As long as you play by Microsoft's rules it doesn't matter if you have to
activate or not. The worst that will happen is you will have to phone a toll
free number to activate. I just did this for a customer yesterday. It took
less than ten minutes. The rules you have to follow are in the EULA for your
current version of XP. It is normally in your C:\Windows\System32 folder. It
is called EULA.TXT. In any scenario that I can think of you are within the
EULA and should have no problems activating if necessary.

It should not affect the activation status of the old computer.

Here are the 10 specific hardware items that are monitored by
activation:
Display Adapter
SCSI Adapter
IDE Adapter (effectively the motherboard)
Network Adapter (NIC) and its MAC Address
RAM Amount Range (i.e., 0-64mb, 64-128mb, etc.)
Processor Type
Processor Serial Number
Hard Drive Device
Hard Drive Volume Serial Number (VSN)
CD-ROM / CD-RW / DVD-ROM

The NIC is counted as 3 items (for some reason).
If there are multiple drives then only the first drive of each type is
included in the activation check.

A reactivation is required if Windows fails to find 7 of the monitored
items identical to what they were when last activated.

Hope this explains the situation.

Good luck
