Reactivation key invalid

I acquired a reactivation key for WinXP OEM from Microsoft via telephone, but
the key is rejected as invalid. After six attempts, I'm sure the numbers are
entered correctly. WinXP Home is installed on the OEM Micron, but there are
changes in Video card, Sound card, addition of USB 2 card and addition of
Hard drive.

When booted in safe mode (no networking) I can open office programs, but my
copy of Mathematica 5.2 will not open. Is it possible the activation
requirement of the Mathematica software is preventing the reactivation key
from being accepted?

No, its unrelated. Contact Microsoft again and
make sure you activate after obtaining a new key
while they are on the phone. Make sure you only
use the OEM key with the OEM version of XP.

I have called Microsoft three times. During one of the calls the OEM CD ID#
was submitted, and that ID is considered valid. Every time Microsoft support
generates a verification ID it is the same.

The reactivation screen displays a system ID (9 groups of six). When I
communicated the OEM number (from the side of the computer) , I was told it
was a valid key, but don't believe the OEM key was used to generate a
confirmation ID, since the same confirmation ID has been returned to me six
times.

Are you saying that the OEM XP ID should cause a different confirmation ID
to be generated?

WinXP is installed on the same computer I purchased. Office 2003 upgrade has
been installed, to acquire PowerPoint (rebate program offered earlier this
year) and all the service packs.

You need to contact Microsoft and let them know your
Confirmation ID they provided does not permit you to
activate. Explain your dilemma to them.

Carey,

I was told the the primary responsibility is with the OEM, which I take to
mean that XP should be reinstalled.

No, it was too late yesterday evening.

I won't be able to respond to any posts to this newsgroup until tomorrow.
