I recently had to resort to reinstalling windows XP home sp2 over the top of
itself to recover from numerous unwanted bugged features....

I set an account as 'Charles' like I had originally...

Now the system has one called 'Charles' but it gets it data from a folder in
'Documents and Settings' called 'Charles.LONE-6354198BED' which seems to be
a combination of the user name & the pc name.... I presume it done this
automatically as an accont folder called 'Charles' already existed...

Now, in 'Documents and Settings' is my Original account folder called
'Charles' which still has all my previous settings, links, favourites, docs
etc....

How can I set up an account to reuse my original folder... ? then I could
delete this new one....

Not recommended - it sounds like you did a parallel install or a
semi-destructive installation - not a repair install.
Just copy your files/folders/documents/favorites and reset your settings
manually.

I had not a lot of option as on a repair install it would stop at leaving 34
minutes to go & wouldn't go any further no matter how long I left it or how
many times it restarted the setup.... I reinstalled over the top, windows
appeared to delete system files & finally replaced itself....

At the mo, the system is running perfectly, as new, it is rock steady,
unlike before... when I had developed all sorts of strange probs after a
power failure.... probs like not being able to use the update site, many
other sites couldn't be accessed, loads of wan-miniports non working etc,
sound device disappearing off the face of the earth, none of which were
cured by any normal methods...

By the looks of a quick read, it appears to be just the info I am looking
for... thanks a million... :)

Point worth emphasising is thta when you create a new user, you must log-on
as that new user (and off again) once before copying any data to the profile
folder. Otherwise Windows will 'sidestep' the folder and create a new one.
This is what happened before, since the profile aready existied.

cheers for that... I shall remember that.... I will be sorting it very
shortly, now that I have a bit of extra time
