He could use a virtualizer and install XP upgrade edition clean and do the
cd swap when required because at that point the emulated cd drive is under
the control of the virtualization software and not OS/X. He wouldn't need
to install Win98 first.

Good point!
Well I hope the OP sorts through this and gets it all sorted out

The bottom line is that the OP needs to do the thing Apple's way because
Boot Camp is an Apple supported product and he needs to stay within Apple's
guidelines so that his system is fully supported.

As to the vcache tweak, he probably can't. It requires going into Safe Mode
on an OS that probably won't install in the first place. Of course, there
is no Safe Mode on the OS/X side so it is not like setting up a typical
Windows multiboot situation where you could do it in the "other" OS.

I hope so too. I haven't got any different advice over on the apple forum so
I will just have to wait until the Mac arrives and take it from there. I
plan to first try the virtualization route.

Will post back with my experience. Many thanks once again to both of you for
your time. It has been most informative.

Actually, I have a MacBook Pro and have been over all this ground myself. I
run XP Pro on the Windows partition.

The 98SE limit is 768Megs and here is how you get around it:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;q184447&

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;q184447&#appliesto

There is paragraph on that page that instructs on how to overcome this error
if it occurs during setup as well.

That said... I have wellllllllllll over 768 on this machine and it runs it's
98SE Partition just fine. One of my other 98SE machines that had some
difficulties with over 1G responded very well to using Cacheman (cachm550) a
freebie. Get it here or look in your favorite utilities site:

http://www.download3k.com/Install-Cacheman.html

If your 98 box has issues over 768, Cacheman has a settings spot that you
can check to limit RAM to 512. Since 98 only uses 384M in the first place,
Cacheman works like a charm without messing with Windows' settings.
