Re - Replacement Security for Norton 2003 - Attn Thomas G Marshall

Final Solution to my Norton IS 2003 - 2005 upgrade which went horribly
wrong.

Firstly I am a unqualified sys admin at smallish brokerage firm, I
drifted into the job as I happened to get into computers long before
anybody else in the firm and can bullshit my way past the suits until
I figure things out, + I am a lot cheaper than the real thing.

My Solution is possibly not the best in the world but I reckon I have
covered most of the main stuff. Opinions & Criticism welcome.

Firewall - ETEC Routers ( not proved very reliable changing for
Netgear shortly). Built in firewall protects network providing
internet / network cover but does not monitor outgoing connections.

Norton 2003 Firewall retained to cover outgoing connections on all
machines, its simple, it works, it does not cause network problems,
its easy to configure and although dated I reckon it is good enough in
a secondary role supported by more up to date applications.

AV Solution - F Protect.

Possibly not as good as NOD 32 but I have to cater for non pooter
literate sales reps who will not relate well to NOD 32, IMO F Protect
was simpler to apply and up with the best AV which is prolly NOD 32

Discarded Panda as too slow & bloated, Kaspersky likewise but better
than Panda and all the free solutions I decided were not worth risking
my network + job on, Norton 2005 caused me major grief and I have
never liked McAfee for no good reason except I dont like it.

Antispyware I use Ad Aware Pro & Spybot + I have trialed and now
installed Microsoft Antispyware Beta on all machines. I was very
pleasantly surprised at how good and effective it was so despite
misgivings about all things MS related IMO this application is pretty
good for my computer useless colleagues and my blood pressure

Finally I had a look at Trojanhunter (as a few people in this group
recommended, thanks guys) and put it in as a backstop for any trojans
that get through F Protect & Norton 2003.

I never noticed this post to me until now. It was not as a reply to any of
the threads I was in, and as such, it took me to accidentally stumble upon
it in google groups only because I was searching for my name.

Thanks for all the information. I have found a $60 Norton SW 2005 premier
and it has a $30 rebate coupon. Can you tell me what the problem you had
with norton 2005? I'm assuming you meant NAV 2005.
