RE: RAID Strip Size 4k, 16k, 32k, or 64k

I have a W2K Advanced Server SP3 as a IIS5 Web Server but
not sure what setting to choose for the RAID Strip Size
on the IBM controller. I have heard that it can increase
performace if you match it to the OS etc.

From my own tests, go with the Windows defaults and the raid adapter
default stripe size for a general purpose server. On an Lsilogic elite
1600 adapter the default is a 64k stripe, tried smaller and larger, the
64k is optimal.

stripe size and sector/cluster size are being confused here.

windows uses the sector size. bigger stripe sizes will in crease your
performance on the Raid card.

setup a test volume under 2000 and run HDTach, testing with different
cluster sizes 'at the filesystem' level.

This should give you the information you need.

on my large arrays, i use 64K stripes. On smaller ones, i use 32K.

The "default" from windows 'used to format the filesystem is usually
sufficient.
