Re-Instasll over existing XP Home

Had a virus. So I re-installed XP-Home over the existing.
Now I can't use any of my existing programs or re-install
any program. All my registery enteries are doubled. Looks
bad. Any help on this situation?

The virus was so bad I couldn't use restore or even copy
files or make current backups.

Hi,

You made a mess.

Boot the WinXP CD, Start the installer (do not access the repair options).
Hit F8 at the license screen. Now, if you're lucky, the installer will
detect both installations. Have it repair the old installation.

You had better re-install again, and this time make it a clean one that
formats the drive. So copy all data files away, and read Gary
Woodruff's article on Files and settings Transfer at
http://aumha.org/win5/a/fast.htm for help in bringing files and
settings forward.

Then Run the CD from the existing system. Enter Install, change Upgrade
to New Install, then when it asks you to confirm where, you can hit ESC
and get the chance to select the current partition, *delete* it, and
create a new RAW one, going on to format it as part of the setup
