Re-installing XP home

Hi, I took my laptop to a "friend" to take a look at because I was having a
couple of problems and he know's hardware. Unfortunately, he decided to do
me a "Favour" and install XP pro, whereas I had XP home originally. Things
were fine until I couldn't use System restore, and yesterday when I installed
SP2 it wiped my hard drive!! After 14 hours and much sweating I could only
re-install XP pro but would like to get rid of it and have my loving home
edition back. Can anyone guide me through the process of uninstalling pro
and re-installing home... without me having to pay a fortune or having to get
my "Friend" to do it.

P.S I've just started programming in C# on a Computeach course and after
writing a few of dozen of my own programs and classes to turn into my own
personal DLL they got wiped as well!! Six months of hard study down the
toilet!!

Any help would be most appreciated.

Alan

cash,

i'm really sorry about what happened to you. i know how frustrating it can
be when all of your hardwork would just suddenly get lost.

however, i don't believe that it was sp2's fault why your files may have
been erased as sp2 only replaces the windows files on your hard drive.

if you do want to reinstall windows, one thing you may need is the original
certificate of authenticity where the product code may be found. please
take note that reinstalling windows may erase your entire drive and you are
back to scratch.

in order to reinstall windows, all you have to do is place your windows xp
cd in your cd-rom drive, reboot your computer and boot from the cd-rom
drive. if you are not sure on how to do this, you may go to your computer's
bios and look at the options where you can boot from the cd-rom drive. if
you are still unsure, i'm sure your computer's manual can help you with
this.

after you are able to boot from your cd-rom drive, with winxp in it,
everything becomes a breeze. all you have to do is read what's on the
screen and follow the prompts, with your own choices.

i hope this helps a bit.

You need to do a clean install. There is no down grade path from XP Pro
to Home. You will need to format the disk and start over. The critical
part is to delete the existing partition when installing. See this link:

If your data is very important, purchase a new hard drive then have a
professional service retrieve the data from the old drive or if you have
another system [desktop] you can connect the hard drive and use retrieval
software to retrieve the data yourself. Do some Google searches on "data
retrieval" to find the software utilities professional data retrieval
specialists.
Install the new hard drive, use the restore disks that came with the laptop
to restore the laptop to the original shipped state. Be sure to enable a
firewall before connecting to the internet. Then apply the latest updates.
