Re-installing os and programs

As per the advise of the board, I am going to do a
complete re-installation of xp home on a fresh hard
drive. I plan on installing it onto the primary partition
of a 60gb hard drive. The primary partition will have
about 5-10gb assigned to it, with the secondary partition
used for program files.

What I want to know is, once I have re-installed xp, how
do I move the Program Files folder from my c: drive to my
d: drive, OR, do I just create a new folder to put all my
programs in on the d: drive and leave the stand program
files folder empty?

Also, if I add another hard drive to my computer before I
re-install, and it is a slave drive, can I be sure that
once the master drive is re-formatted, that the master
drive will be partitioned with c: and d:, or will my
slave drive become c: once the format is complete?

Master hard drive:60gb 2 partitions (c:)5-10gb (d:)50-55gb
Slave drive:60gb 0 partitions (e:,f:, or g:)
Master Disc drive: Currently Drive e:
Slave Disc drive: Currently drive f:

Last thing. With the new hard drive I am getting to make
this all work, can I format it to NTFS in xp before I
delete xp and format the other drive. My current drive is
fat32, and I want to install and format the new hard
drive, transfer all my information onto the new drive,
THEN format the original drive, partition it, and re-
install xp onto the primary partition, and re-install all
my programs to the secondary partition.

Much love!

Hi,

You can simply create your own "Program files" folder on D, then direct any
installations there using a custom install.
Also, if I add another hard drive to my computer before I
re-install, and it is a slave drive, can I be sure that
once the master drive is re-formatted, that the master
drive will be partitioned with c: and d:, or will my

It shouldn't change the drive lettering scheme. However, if the drive is not
currently attached, I would save it 'til after. You want the system to be
simply during an installation.
Last thing. With the new hard drive I am getting to make
this all work, can I format it to NTFS in xp before I
delete xp and format the other drive. My current drive is
fat32, and I want to install and format the new hard

THEN format the original drive, partition it, and re-
install xp onto the primary partition, and re-install all
my programs to the secondary partition.

You can convert it ahead of time, but I recommend that you simply create the
NTFS drive as part of setup.

Leave Program Files on C: - there are quite a few things that will
already be in it, and a few that sulk if it is not on C:. Instead make
a folder (any name you like) on D and when you install anything take its
Custom install which will almost always allow you to Browse to put it
there.

I'd go a bit higher than your lower limit for the size of C: - say make
it 8GB if you are putting general programs on D:

But most important is to move your My Documents etc to the second
partition - Have a window open on
C:\Documents and settings\you
to show it; another on D:, and then *right* drag the folder across,
taking *Move here*

You can also change location of Temporary Internet Files in Control
Panel - Internet Options, click Settings (And while about it reduce the
space it can claim - say to 50MB); and of Outlook Express's data files,
in its Tools - Options, Maintenance, click Store Folder
