Re-Installing in Safe Mode

Bob Solman

Hi,

My system is a w2K Professional.

After un-installing a game I now get errors in explorer.exe

My active desktop is withheld so I get a blank screen.

Through task manager I can access the web, run excel,
review my directories etc.

I tried installing w2k SP4 - but same problem.

I have tried W2K upgrade from disk, but explorer errors
prevent the re-boot.

Can I upgrade in safe mode??

Thanks

Hi Bob,

I got good news and I got bad news.
Which first?

Well let's do this the kind way.
The bad news is, most folks usually do what you did.
Before knowing what can & can not be done,
they do things that they don't know will work.
And afterward, drop it like a hot potato.

Now since I have beat my chest,
I am going to teach you what you need to know.
All applications are like food; there are things to eat,
and their is really good. and both of them can be screwed up.
First, there are a few basics that are basic about using a computer.
With W2K, to return to a healthy state, an ERD and Full Backup
(with system state). but before that for your protection, if using the
internet,
It is imperative to have a good AVP, a firewall, Privacy software,
Spyware.
You can obtain all of these for a very reasonable price at
www.spychecker.com .

As far as the state of your computer, you should always do an ERD and
Backup
before uninstalling programs you're not familiar with. Most programs
that borrow files
and share drivers with the operating system cannot be removed. The
safest thing to do
is to leave the files and drivers on the box. They can't hurt , and
contrary to many's belief,
they will not slow the computer (well, so little mox nix). Now, off the
soap box.

It won't do any good from this problem to run tune-up commands (but it
may for other preexisting
conditions. So let's do things in this order. First, from a command
prompt run CHKDSK /R/F,
say "Y" for yes and it will take at least 30 minutes after you reboot.
When complete, restart, and
from a command prompt run SFC /SCANNOW. After that is complete, reboot
to your BIOS. To
do this after starts posting, tap the "delete" key continuously, and the
BIOS program will open.
Look for the boot order and change the first boot device from a floppy
to a CD-ROM. After,
exit the BIOS by reading the directions, and place the W2K installation
disk into the tray.
Restart. If the CD-ROM is bootable, the screen will come up for you to
install the OS.
When this happens, choose "R" for repair. Let the installation complete
itself. If for
no bootable CD-ROM, you will need the four bootdisks that came with the
OS.
If you need to use them, place Disk 1 in the Floppy drive, and start
your
computer. Choose to install the OS, follow the prompts and choose
"R" for repair having the CD inserted when prompted for it. When
that is complete, remove the CD, and restart the computer,
and run a defrag. In fact you may need to run it three
times. After you've completed this, you still may
have a problem with some hardware due to
the drivers being corrupt or missing. For
instance, if the printer doesn't print
correctly, go to your Device
Manager, right click on the
printer, and choose prop-
erties. Try to update your
drivers, and if that still
doesn't work, you can
uninstall the printer.
Afterward, boot and
see if Plug and Pray
will find the printer
without any problem.
Do this with any other
hardware that is on
the fritze. After you
have completed all
of this try your Active
Desktop, and opening
all applications. If you
have any other prob-
lems, please come
back and post the
problem, so an
expert can help
you with them,
because after
this I'm just an
ex- (never was
an expert, but
are some very
capable heads
is the forum. Good luck to you. I hope you are up
and running now, so that I feel reinforced by this effort.
And please take care of your equipment and it will for you.

good computing,
don
