A Partition is an area within a disk that can be formatted and turned into a
logical drive . Why do you ask, and what results did you expect to have?

If you installed via booting from the XP CD, and did not tell the install to
leave the file system as is - this is the last option - the drive was
formatted clean and a new XP install was added.

If this isn't what happened. can you please be more descriptive?

Have a read on the last point at http://aumha.org/win5/a/parts.htm

You will need to reinstall other software that you use from the original
source, and to restore data files from backups.

And do some patches of the system. Before connecting to the net, Make
sure the firewall is installed (in Control Panel - Network Connections
r-click your connection, Properties and on the Advanced page click the
enable box., and apply.

Then start off with the security hotfix Q823980 against the blaster worm
from Windows Update ( or from
http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;823980 - get the 32 bit
Windows XP version) . Then other updates, starting with Service Pack 1
Unless you are on a broadband connection I think it worth buying the CD
of that for $10 from
http://www.microsoft.com/WindowsXP/pro/downloads/servicepacks/sp1/default..asp
and down at the bottom is the link to order it.
