Install of XP (any service pack) will only place a limited video car
driver. Once you have finished installing the XP, you need to install
the most recently drivers for all your PC components

1) Motherboard chipset drivers
2) Original video card drivers
3) Network adapters
4) Sound drivers
5) Monitor drivers.

I had been to Dells website and downloaded a couple of video drivers but they
still won't give me the option of 1440X900 just a multitude of others. They
are all listed as recommended. How do you determine which one is correct?
Thanks.

Use a system inventory program to see what video card you have. If your
video is integrated (on the motherboard), also look at the motherboard
type. This will tell you the correct video driver to download from Dell. If
you aren't getting the right resolution, you haven't installed the correct
drivers.

I have tried all video driver from dell to no avail. I then ran the
advisor and discovered that no display device is displayed or recognised. The
monitor came
with the Dell Inspiron 531S and is made by ViewSonic it is working well but
the system doesn't see it. Any help?

It seem that you still have a problems with drivers. Locate the
correct chipset drviers for your motherboard in the Dell. Once these
are installed, thay should provide you with an AGP slot driver. Once
this slot driver is correctly installed, the display device (aka video
card) should be detected and you will then be able to install the
video drivers
