i've got a laptop that was xp home and was recently
upgraded to xp pro. the registry is corrupt and i'm
running into all kinds of problems accomplishing the steps
in the knowledgebase.

can I do a full re-install of xp pro without compromising
the data on the hard drive? any other suggestions?

All you do is an upgrade install of XP Pro to overwrite XP Home. All your
files and data will still be there.
