Re-install Windows XP

Guest

My computer recently suffered a power hit while updating it's registry. Big
failure.
I've got it rebooting again but can't make internet connection. Worked with
my ISP and determined it pings just fine but must be a problem with IE. They
said win sock.I decided to re-install XP from my OEM DVD. Problem is I had
SP2 on the computer and attemps to re-install are blocked with the message
that my current version is newer than the DVD version. I am now at a
standstill. Microsoft won't help because it's an OEM issue. Compaq won't help
because it's off warranty.

How do I wipe XP and reinstall ?

Thanks

Steve

You try uninstalling/reinstalling IE by itself yet? Or better yet drop
IE altogether and download Firefox for browsing.

Or not. Firefox is a steaming pile of holes and vulnerabilities. I don't let
it on my machines - it's the fool's gold of security - basically untested,
untried and uses a "security by obscurity" model. My brother wanted to try
it, so we put it on his machine. No sooner was it on than there was a
compromise - the Java VM that came with it had a vulnerability that was
compromised and infected the system with malware. Soewnded up having to pull
out my Maxtor MaxBlast zero-fill disk - all thanks to "Firefox".

Your experience with Firefox was certainly an ananomaly. Look here for real
stats continuously updated, not just one event:

Never ever had any problems since moving from Exploder & Outloo
to Firefox & Thunderbird....

You can be on Exploder or Outlook ten minutes & get over 12
unwanted cookies.... be on Firefox or Thunderbird all day and ge
around 15 and since moving my AV think
it's on Vacation...

Maybe if Exploder and Outlook [b:2b1bf0b518]was[/b:2b1bf0b518] secur
there would be less patches ....... to fill them holes eh

But the OP was about installing X

It's "Explorer"; and it's "fewer" not "less". "Less" is quantitative.
"Fewer" is an adjective describing "number of". "Them" is a personal
pronoun. To use it to refer to a non-personal object is misnomer.

Cookies can be turned off in Internet Explorer - you needn't have gone to
the length of installing another browser to achieve such a thing. Internet
Explorer enables quite a "fine grain" control over cookies. It even can
enable you to reject or accept on a "per cookie" basis.

a) Slipstream the DVD to the latest (SP2).
or
b) Uninstall the SP2.

You should still be able to boot from the CD and delete the partition even
with a non slipstreamed disc. This is because you are deleting the
partition. It wont let you do a repair install but you said you wanted to
wipe XP and reinstall.
