Re-inserted graphics won't display properly

I'm having a MADDENING problem in FrontPage 2003. Here's an example of what
happens:

1. I insert a graphic file (i.e., "apple.gif", a red apple).
2. I resize it to 50% within FP.
3. I modify the original graphic in Photoshop, changing it to purple.
4. I delete the graphic in FP, and insert the new, full-size purple
"apple.gif" file from its original location.
5. FrontPage displays the red-50% version -- the one I deleted!
6. Further, if I insert "apple.gif" anywhere else in my web -- even though
apple.gif is now purple and fullsize -- what appears in FrontPage is the old,
red-50% image!

The only way I can get around this, is renaming the file (apple1.gif).
Then, FrontPage correctly displays the purple version.

It's like FP somehow latches on to that specific filename, and even after
the file changes or is replaced, anytime "apple.gif" is inserted, it displays
the version it "remembers" instead of the actual graphic file. This happens
even if I have not saved the old version to the /images folder!

I hope this makes sense. It's driving me absolutely crazy. I've recreated
a number of graphics for my site, but when I replace the old ones with the
new, only the old version is displayed.

Can someone please help???

If you want to use third party image editor the best way to avoid this is to
register Photoshop within FP: Tools | Options | Configure Editors. Then when
you click on the image from within FP to edit it it will open the image in
PS, but the important part here is that it creates a temp file so when you
save the changed image in PS it saves the change in FP too. You don't have
to worry about the issue you're having.

If you don't want to work that way...then edit your image in PS.
Delete the old image in FP.
RE-Import the new image into FP
Replace it into the design from within where you stored it in FP.

PS....*DONT* resize images with FP.

Here's how I do it, and I've never had a problem, so maybe this will help. I
do all my image editing, resizing, etc before I bring the photo into FP.
Then I drag the photo from Windows Explorer into a folder in FP, where I
want it. After I lay out my page, however, I may decide that I want to do
more work on the photo. The photo is still also in its original folder
outside of FP, so I work on THAT copy, save it again to its original folder,
and then drag the modified copy into the folder in FP. It works perfectly.
And if I have my page open in FP, I will see the photo change before my
eyes.

Don't touch your images with FrontPage. Finish them (color, size and
optimization) completely before you IMPORT them into your site. FP is doing
OK ... it's your technique that is creating the problem!

I don't do image editing within FP because of poor quality. But I ran
into the problem you described a few times myself. And even done the
renaming trick. It can also somtimes happen when you you change an
image's properties (image tag) in FP normal view and it still shows it
the old way.

In most cases when that probelm happens, if you save the page and
refresh FP (F5) it will show the updated page with the update iamges,
stylesheets etc.

Also, you can use an FPCleaner utility to delte FP's caches or empty
those folders on yoyr own. Search the NG for FPCleaner for the link.

found that any images added to the web *while the web is open* will

Don't get me wrong, I am simply suggesting to the OP what I have
found. If I have a web open, and someone sends me an image for
inclusion on a page, and I save that image to the appropriate folder
in the (still open) web, the image does not appear in the folder when
I do Alt,I,P,F to insert it.

It only appears after the web has been closed and reopened.

Edit and resave an image file which is already in the web, and the
newer version is available immediately.
