Could it be some program that you installed on all the
machines.....antivirus program would be a suspect.
 
This is on an initial Install , no other programs have been
installed.

yup same here , no floppy whatsoever in xp pro ... even tried a
different motherboard but all to no avail.
the ms knowledge base is not helpfull either. very annoying.
 
Do you have it enabled in your BIOS? Search through it (BIOS is different
in different boards) until you find the settings and see if 1.44 and
read\write is enabled.
