I am using Windows XP Home Edition on a Dell Dimension computer.
When I click on empty recycle bin I get the following message: "Can not
delete Dc583. It is being used by another program.Close program, etc." I do
not know what Dc583 and there are no other programs open when I try to empty
the contents of the the recycle bin. I tried searching for Dc583 in the
search function but to no avail. I would like to rectify the problem because
I have about a meg of files to get rid of. However I need a simple to follow
solution. Anyone? Much appreciation

Try going into safe mode and delete the bin. Also, try something like
CCleaner as it is automated to delete files. The file that does not want to
be deleted is likely being used by the system. So it needs to be closed as
it may be locked and hidden. Check your system processes or your startups in
msconfig to see if this file is being used. (According to a search DC583 is
a Directron BudgetMaster DC583 Desktop PC System with Intel Pentium 4 2.8GHz
CPU) Maybe you have somekind of virus that is trying to sabotage your pc by
having you delete a critical file.....

Thanks for the suggestions which I'll need to take one at a time.
This will truly be Windows 101-- How do I go into safe mode and then delete?

First, go to filehippo.com and download CCleaner. Install it and run an
analysis. A slew of files will appear on the listing. Thenk click Fix to
delete them. Afterwards check your reg recy bin to see if you still have the
problem. If you do, search and download "Spyware Terminator", download and
install. Then run a thorough check for virus's and spywares. If found, then
destroy them. Again check to see if that mysterious file is still posing a
problem. If so, go to microsoft.com and study up on safe mode - enter into
the search window "how to use safe mode in win xp" and begin your education
from there. You will likely be taken to a place where there are many
instructions, tip and tricks for your win xp...... hope this helps..

The recycler folder or info files are probably corrupt. Try deleting the
recycler folder(s), Windows will recreate it when you
reboot. From a command prompt isssue the following command:

rd /s /q c:\recycler

Remember that if you have more than one drive you will have to issue the
command for each drive, changing the c: with the appropriate drive letter.

The "Dc583" file is simply a recycler file index, it means file 583
Deleted from drive c.

Hi John,
I liked your suggestion; it was short and sweet. Unfortunately, I received
a response saying, "The process cannot access the file because it is being
used by another process." Is this called a mobius loop? Can you take me a bit
further?
Thanks in advance.
