re crossover cable

Hi there
I am quite new to networking but have 2 comps of which I want to transfer
file back and forth but only want my main comp to connect to the internet. I
went to buy a hub or router and was told did not need one for 2 comps just
use a crossover cable.
I did get this to work once when one comp was xp and the other was 98 but
cannot seem to get my head round it this time.
Any help would be gratefully received as this nearly silver haired surfer it
getting there fast.

Workgroup is the same and make sure that secrities is
able to write read and others

Run XP's Network Setup Wizard on both computers. It will make all the
necessary settings:
