Re activate due to new hardware

I had a major hardware failure and replace my mother
board. I re-installed XP with no problems, including re-
regerstering over the internet during installation.
everthing is functioning fine except I can't down load XP
updates. On my first attempt I got a warning about a
invalid key, now any windows update will select the
patches to download, but then hangs.

Do I need to re-activate my XP?? I call the activation
#, but it did have a option for re-activation existing
installations.
