I had the same Problem

I found only one way to get access to the desktop :
start the help and support center
activate "get help from a friend"
then you have to send an invitation to your friend
do not use messenger or e-mail but post the invitation
to a file on your desktop (3rd alternative)
now you must start this invitation file on your laptop
In my case it worked doing so

That is for Remote Assistance not Remote Desktop, which I believe the original poster was referring
to.
