Random shutdowns and program failer

My computer suddenly started shutdowns at random times. They aren't too often
but very strange. Then on startup we have the computer set to request a
password. when you click on the icon it just flashes the password box instead
of just opening it. I figured out that in order to make it stay up so you
could actually put in the pass word you have to press a key on the key board.
then not too long after that i was going to work in Adobe Photoshop and
suddenly realized that it wouldent open or create new documents, so i figured
maybe something important got deleted so i removed it from my computer and
re-installed it. But still it continued to do the same thing. I then did
virus scans and ad ware scans to make sure there was nothing on my computer
that shouldn't be. my results from those scans were nothing. It seemed to
think that everything was fine. I am still continuing to have problems and i
dont know what to do. I cant even move icons on my desktop, or drag files
into new places. Someone please help me. What do i do?

I would run chkdsk. To see if there are errors on your hard disk. To do so:

Right click you start bar , select explore, right click your local disk
(usually c) select properties , select check now . Check box for
automatically fix file system errors and Scan for and attemp recovery of bad
sectors

You will have to reboot. The scan will take place when windows boots up.

Unfortunatly the results of chkdsk scroll fast and you might not see the
results. To recieve the results of chkdks :

Open up control panel.
Choose adminstrator tool, choose event viewer, choose application. Look for
source Winlogon and select it. That will have a log of chkdsk you ran.

Did you look at the log on event viewer. There might be a log of the error. I
would be curious what it said. There is a paste button below the up and down
arrows you can paste that here.

Beyond looking for the source winlogon. If you a red colored entries it
might give you and us more information.

There is an alternate way to find out if your hardrive is at fault. First
you have to get the name of your hard drive manufacturer. Then google that
name and with that manufacturer. Within the website there are free
manufacturer scanning
Software.

Here is how you get your manufacture name:

Start menu , all programs , accessories, system tools , select system
information

Scroll down to Storage , expand it , select disks
Use the model information and google that and you can either download or
have it mailed to you

ok...i went to administrative tools and then to event viewer. There are 4
categories Application, Security, System, and Internet. Under the category
Application there are a lot of errors! Stuff like STCAgent, UmxCfg,
XMLSecDBParser. Then In the category Security there are a few failures but
not that many. Under the category System there are alot of cdrom errors!
there are also errors on E100B, W32Time, disk, system error and service
control manager. There are a lot on disk! Then under the category internet
there is nothing.

Yes we have been keeping up with the updates. but it has been saying lately
that the updates for our CA Security thing have been unsuccessful.

Its too much to copy n paste so i didnt.

I got to backup here. The way I see it you either have windows registry
corruption or a possible hard drive problem.

Hopefully your computer can with Windows Repair Disk. If you have it ,
repost your problem and ask how to use your repair disk.

Other computers such as mine came with OEM disk that complelly write over
your disk and return it to vanilla

Or there is another partition on your hard drive that has the restore
(vanilla) facility

It won't hurt getting your hard drive manufactor disk scan and downloading it
and reboot with it in 3 1/2 floppy (if you have one) But do you have a
windoiws repair cd?
