Occasionally, my laptop will start beeping randomly. It
will have 3 short beeps. It will repeat this a few times
and stop. Some time later it will do this again. This
doesn't happen every time my computer is on.

the beeps aren't random. your computer is telling you some
thing.
it could be a hardware error or some program is set to
beep when some thing specific is done.

if its an IBM laptop, then its most likely the laptop picking up a wireles signal, or low battery.

they are random and I can't say they have anything to do
with the bios because there is no code for that sequence
of beeps for phoenix bios, and it's not an ibm picking up
a wirless signal because it also happens in linux,
but today the sequence of six beeps happened within a few
seconds of each other, and then the laptop shut off. I
called Medion - manufacturer of my laptop and they
couldn't help me more than saying if it happens again to
send it in for them to take a look at it. luckily enough
I still have the warrenty.

any new ideas on this one?

No, I think you need to listen to your laptop mftr. and send it in for
repair. Obviously it is a hardware problem since the beeps are
happening in both operating systems.

Good luck,
