ramdisk benchmark

FYI, just for fun, here is a Sisoftware Sandra file system benchmark
of a local Linux RAM disk. Sandra is running under the windows
emulator WINE on the the boot-from-CD Linux operating system called
Knoppix 3.3.

DRIVE INDEX: 554,424 kB/s (4x RAID-0 is about 90,000kB/s)

Test File Size : 717MB

Benchmark Breakdown
Buffered Read : 1069 MB/s
Sequential Read : 558 MB/s
Random Read : 505 MB/s
Buffered Write : 1068 MB/s
Sequential Write : 579 MB/s
Random Write : 529 MB/s

Drive
Drive Type : Hard Disk
Total Size : 799MB
Free Space : 796MB, 100%

System : Athlon XP 2500+, 1 GB DDR dual channel

I bet running it on Win 2K/XP with the Microsoft RAM disk would be even
faster. Search for it on the Microsoft support page.

Unlikely. These are realistic raw RAM-Speeds for the measurement
platform. So unless MS fakes the reads/writes, there is no way
they could be much faster.

Sure Arnie. You're the resident Windows expert now?

If you run a Win app under Wine, there is going to be extra overhead.

Here's another bench, this time running under XP Pro SP1a.
The ram drive software is RamDisk Plus 7.0 by SuperSpeed.com,
optimized for AMD and costing $100. Sandra benchmark runs faster from
Linux even though it is running under emulation!! Granted this is not
a scientific test, but it is a real-world data point that anyone can
try easily. BTW, I tried almost all the freeware RamDisk programs on
the Internet (including that Microsoft one), and they all either
crashed, didn't install, or had severe limitations.

DRIVE INDEX: 460,297 kB/s

Benchmark Breakdown
Buffered Read : 622 MB/s
Sequential Read : 450 MB/s
Random Read : 449 MB/s
Buffered Write : 590 MB/s
Sequential Write : 449 MB/s
Random Write : 450 MB/s

Drive
Drive Type : Hard Disk
Total Size : 599MB
Free Space : 599MB, 100%
