Can you tell me what the recommended minimum RAM is to run
Windows 2000? A tech reformatted my hard drive and
installed Windows 2000 rather than the Windows ME that I
had before. After I got the computer back and installed
some applications, now it randomly reboots. I'm wondering
if I need more RAM.

although it says 64mb you'll find a W2K system almost unusable unless
its got 128mb as a minimum

To be able to see the blue screen stop message; Control
Panel|System|Advanced|Startup and Recovery, I usually like to
uncheck"Automatically reboot" this way you get a chance to read the stop
error.

Actually, I saw this same suggestion in an earlier post,
so I've already done that. It gave me a Stop Message of:
0x0000000A (0x00000000, 0x00000002, 0x00000000,
0x8042D8FE) IRQL-not-less-or-equal ***Address 8042D8FE
base@80400000, dateStamp 3d366b8b - ntoskrhl.exe
I've tried looking at the sites you suggested, but I'm
kind of a novice at this sort of troubleshooting and I
really couldn't decipher it for sure. Something on there
was what made me think maybe I was short of RAM.

- Low RAM itself shouldn't cause random reboots, as long as
there's the minimum pointed out elsewhere in this thread.
- Did the tech do anything else? Open the case, for example,
to install a new drive? Often slightly loosened components
can cause that rebooting symptom. Cables, cards, RAM...
- Are you sure the machine wasn't rebooting itself before
you added those apps?
- Can you uninstall the apps, check for such rebooting
with none? Then reinstall them one by one, checking each
time - maybe isolate a software culprit?
- Any clues in Event Viewer or Device Manager?
- Does the hardware actually support W2k? Some older
machines, especially some with older systems preinstalled
by the vendor, may have hardware that isn't up to snuff.
- Are ALL motherboard/device drivers W2k-specific? That's
absolutely req'd.
- Ask the tech whether he checked the machine and its
peripherals for W2k compatibility...he/she may not know
some of the above.
- If you do not have valid/legal installation media for
W2k, by the way, and if that tech is someone who may
disappear, you may be setting yourself up for catastrophe
should that drive or just W2k itself fail sometime. You
won't be able to repair or recover.

If you post back, stay in this thread and give details of what you &
others have tried - that'll maintain the history of this problem.

How much RAM do you have?

A stop error generally points to one thing: hardware....ie. drivers
The first thing that I would do is make sure that drivers for every piece
of hardware are updated. Also, make sure that all of your hardware is
compatible with Windows 2000
