sorry, I posted this on the wrong board first.
I have XP with only 244 RAM. Is it OK to install SP2? Do
I HAVE to install? Will my computer get any slower if I
do install SP@2?

Depends what you use it for.If it's only for email, simple word
processing and a bit of internet surfing, then 244 MB (strange amount
BTW) should be OK. if you edit huge video files, then no.

Yes, I use for personal fun. My concern is that somewhere
I read the SP2 requires 256MB ram in order to install. Is
is OK to INSTALL this with only 244 (I know 244 is an odd
amount). don't want to crash this computer

Sure you have 244MB ? How ?

I don't know how..I just read what was in the properties
in My computer. the first time I tried to put in SP2 my
computer crashed but I did not have all the updates in
from windows first. I do now and would like to try
again. Maybe the information in the properties is
incorrect. I just wanted another opinion if it is safe
to try again to install SP2?

My opinion, is that you might have 256 ram, not 244. a good way to find out
for sure is to open the case if your warranty is up, and just look at the
ram, there should be a sticker on the top of the ram (one of the sides cause
it stands vertical) It should say the amount it is. It is odd that it says
244 mb. I don't know why it would say that

In any case, do you think I am OK to go ahead and put in
the SP@ CD and try to install? Doesn't the installation
look at your system and make sure the system has the
requirements of what it is about to install?

what did you do the last time(u installed it) that it crashed on you? did it
screw up anything?

all seemed to go fine but it would not boot up again.
even in sage mode. I have a amd athlon procesor..does
that matter.

Fist, the 244 is probably due to 12 MB of shared ram for onboard video.
That said, I never recommend less than 512 for any computer. It will
seem like a whole new computer if you spend $40-$60 on another 256 of ram.

The reason she has 244MB, almost certainly, is that 256MB of RAM
is installed, and 12MB of it is used for onboard video.

I agree but until I cna get that done, do you think I am
OK to try again to install SP2?

Just to thank all of your help and to let you know the SP2
and all the updates went in just fine.a big relief..thanks
again

Yes; the system does not use appreciably more RAM.
Do I HAVE to install?

It is advisable, apart from anything else a great deal of code has been
redone to eliminate buffer overruns.

do install SP@2?

No - but make sure it is a clean machine before running it; run up to
date AV and Anti-spy
